How we wrote this: A plain-English summary of Rule 19 of the official Rules of Golf as published by the R&A, checked October 29, 2026.
Ball under a bush, wedged in a tree root or buried in a bunker face? Rule 19 lets you get out of trouble, normally for one penalty stroke.
Who decides, and where it applies
Rule 19.1: only the player may decide to treat their ball as unplayable. You can do it anywhere on the course except a penalty area. If your ball is unplayable in a penalty area, your only relief is under Rule 17 (see our penalty areas guide).
The three options (one penalty stroke each)
| Option | What you do | Need to know where the ball is? |
|---|---|---|
| Stroke and distance (19.2a) | Play again from where you made the previous stroke | No: you can use it even if the ball isn't found |
| Back-on-the-line (19.2b) | Drop behind the ball's spot, keeping that spot between the hole and where you drop, as far back as you like; one club-length relief area, not nearer the hole | Yes |
| Lateral relief (19.2c) | Drop within two club-lengths of the ball's spot, not nearer the hole | Yes |
If the ball is up in a tree, the reference point for lateral relief is the spot directly below the ball on the ground. The Rules expand the lateral relief area to four club-lengths for players who use a wheeled mobility device (Rule 25.4m).
In a bunker
Rule 19.3 gives four choices:
- Stroke and distance, one penalty stroke.
- Back-on-the-line in the bunker, one penalty stroke.
- Lateral relief in the bunker, one penalty stroke.
- Back-on-the-line outside the bunker, for a total of two penalty strokes.
With options 2 and 3, the ball must be dropped in and come to rest in the bunker.
When to choose which
- If the spot behind you is open, back-on-the-line can give the best angle.
- If you just need to escape a bush, lateral relief is often quickest.
- If you can't find the ball, only stroke and distance works, so think about a provisional ball (see our Rule 18 guide).
